An independent insurance
contract wording specialist

"This is exactly what we are looking for, the level of detail is spot on" M.S.

"These wording drafts are great - I think it's a much simpler layout like this and will be much easier to explain to clients" J.S.

Welcome!

I established Kentish Wordsmith Limited ('KWL') in 2023 to use 40+ years of knowledge and experience, gained in and around the London insurance market, to help insurers and insurance brokers ensure the production and use of quality policy wordings and related documentation.  You can find out a little more about me under 'Qualifications' below.

Despite the continuing advances in technology and AI, at the heart of every insurance sold by an insurer or negotiated by a broker remains a contract wording. We owe it to customers to make this as clear and accurate as we can.  Interested in how KWL may be able to help you?

Steve

What KWL does

KWL helps insurers, brokers or other firms connected with the insurance market produce quality insurance or facultative reinsurance contract documentation.  As the 'Kentish Wordsmith' (and sole employee of KWL), I am happy to consider any reasonable request in this niche part of the insurance world. I have worked with a range of organisations, from small MGAs to large companies.
For each contract expectations are discussed and deliverables agreed.  While each client will have their own requirements, as a guide, the services that I can provide as a consultant include:
  • Assistance with wording reviews, analysis and comparison work.
  • 'Second pair of eyes' checks:  copy-editing or proof reading of wordings and related documentation.
  • Assistance with drafting of new insurance wordings, clauses and endorsements or redrafting of existing products.
  • The development of technical guidance on wordings.
  • Training for staff relating to insurance contracts and the approach to reviews.
  • Any other projects related primarily to insurance contract wordings.

Any exclusions or limitations?

In truth there are few areas I have not come across in my years working in this field. I have little knowledge or experience of long-term life assurance or motor insurance and only limited incidental involvement in treaty reinsurance. Otherwise at one time or another I have reviewed or drafted wordings for most of the classes written in the London insurance market.

For more information about my level of experience and knowledge in different classes, please refer to the 'Experience' page.

Qualifications

Qualified through experience and study.

I describe myself as an 'old school' wording specialist, but one who recognises the realities of the modern insurance world. I have spent over 45 years in insurance, 39 of those within the world of wordings. I started my career at Lloyd's Policy Signing Office before joining a succession of insurance brokers. Most recently I spent 17 years working for one of the major Lloyd's Syndicates.

I am a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute (FCII) and hold a Diploma in English Law from the Open University.  You can find me on LinkedIn too (as Steve Dyke).

KWL is registered with the UK Information Commissioner's Office, and has Professional Liability and Public Liability insurance.

Why not get in touch?

If you work for an insurer, a broker or any other entity involved in insurance and think KWL could help you, why not contact me initially by email (steve@kentishwordsmith.co.uk) or using the 'Contact' tab.  I can then discuss what you are looking for.

KWL works as a consultant on a contract basis, which can be either for a single project or for a fixed term.
